ABOUT US

Training with UWMXDHC

Here at Warwick Mixed Hockey Club, we want to give our members a chance to improve their hockey ability in an inclusive and enjoyable atmosphere. Given the range of abilities we have in the club (from never having picked up a stick before to sponsored players), we make sure each session has elements everyone can engage with. We split our training sessions into different groups based on ability and confidence, so everybody can be comfortable and engaged. We also have a good combination of competitive and friendly matches – whether you are a casual or competitive player, we have something for you.

Our sessions are run by two of the most skillful and experienced players in the club (Dan and Sam), with some sessions being supported by an external coach, and some sessions being supported by our Club Captain Ruby if they relate to our performance team (EH Squad).

Hockey sticks can be provided; however, we recommend having a decent pair of astros or trainers, some shin pads and a mouth guard if you want to play competitively for us! Hockey does have a few unavoidable risks, but with a mouth guard and shin pads we do everything in our control to reduce these!

We run free taster sessions at the start of term 1 and term 2, which everyone is welcome to attend. Keep an eye out on the club's social media at the start of each academic year for more info!

Training times

Tuesday: 5:30pm - 7:30pm
Friday: 4:00 - 7:00pm
Sunday: 2:00pm- 5:00pm

Commitment to UWMXDHC

Unlike most other university sports teams, we do not require mandatory attendance at our training sessions. We understand that that university life often demands other commitments alongside studies, so there is no pressure to attend every training session.

Furthermore, attendance is not obligatory for playing in league matches; match squads are picked on a 'game by game' basis - everyone can sign up to play in a match, irrespective of training attendance or ability. We encourage everyone to play!

If you have any further questions on matches,  feel free to contact our club captain Ruby Millinship.

UWMXDHC has no initiations, and trials are entirely optional!

Picture

We believe that university sports teams should have an inclusive, friendly and supportive environment. Therefore, we are one of the few sports teams at Warwick University that have no initiations - making us a truly inclusive club. Our trials were recently introduced as our club has grown, we have so many skillful players and need a fair way of selecting our EH squad, though this is entirely optional, normal training runs alongside this and this does not affect your ability to play in friendlies or league matches!

Socials with UWMXDHC

We make sure there is something for everyone in our social timetable. Most weeks you can find us at the SU’s club night Pop!, where we dress in themed costumes (which vary in impressiveness) and ‘circle’ in The Copper Rooms. Circling is a Warwick University tradition and important to us here at UWMXDHC. We can’t give too much away before you join us, so make sure to come along to one of our more relaxed Sunday circles at the start of term 1, or any circle throughout the year.
We aren't like most sports clubs, we want you to know the games! Our members are all here to help you have the most fun possible. And of course, drinking is not mandatory, so many of our members circle sober (and we always have a responsible exec member for you to talk to if you need them!).

Drinking not your thing? Not to worry, we have a whole host of sober socials planned throughout the year. In previous years, we have hosted events such as bowling, mini golf, club dinners, paint-balling, trampoline parks and water parks!

All of our socials are run by our social secs, Prash and Sophie. If you have any questions about socials, feel free to message them!

TOURNAMENTAL

Tournamental is the University of Warwick Mixed Hockey Club's annual 7-a-side tournament and has been running for over 10 years, attracting mixed hockey teams from universities all across the country. It takes place a few weeks before the Easter break. The event has changed format over the past few years, but it will always involve a big tournament hosted at our pitches in Warwick!
How it works:
Sunday:

~ 7-a-side Tournament (teams must have 3 male and 3 female players at all times)
~ Cup & Plate competitions
~ Further charity challenges or bake sales

Each year Tournamental is organised by our Tournaments Secretary, this year that is Keerit. If you have any questions or want to get involved yourself as a University Mixed Hockey Team in this year's Tournamental, please get in contact with the club at [email protected] and speak to Keerit!

Hear from our members!

Joining the University of Warwick’s Mixed Hockey team was one of the best decisions I made during my masters year. I was immediately welcomed into a kind and inclusive space, where I was both able to compete and have fun. As an international student, I was truly fortunate to find such a community
